All Nighter

Darrin stepped into the air-conditioned kitchen with a sigh of relief. He let the screen door swing shut, smiling in appreciation as it failed to squeak. Item number two on today’s To Do list could be crossed off as soon as he put the groceries away. He dropped the plastic bags on the kitchen table with a sigh. Should have made two trips, but there was so much to do, he’d nearly crippled himself trying to save five minutes.

He was rearranging the tiny freezer above the refrigerator and wondering if there was enough credit on the Sears card for a small chest freezer when the very silence of the house hit him.

“Kelly?” If the man had neglected their To Do list in favor of a game of pick–up in the park...

“In here.” Kelly’s weak baritone came from the front of the house.

Significant other accounted for. “Where’s Charlie?”

The house had been a veritable cacophony of sound since they’d adopted the troubled teen two years earlier. Music, television, friends, jubilation and moody, self destructive anger had taken over their once peaceful home.

“She’s across town at Amy’s.”

Darrin stopped rooting through the groceries. “We’re alone?” He snatched up a pork roast and a package of salmon steaks, slinging a gallon of milk from his pinky, then haphazardly stashed them in the fridge.

“Yeah.”

Bliss. Pure unadulterated bliss.

“How long?” Juggling bacon, eggs, and Swiss cheese, Darrin spun back to the fridge to shove them inside. The rest could wait.

A smug, “All night,” drifted down the hall.

“Kelly...” He kicked off his flip flops and forced his hands from the groceries. Dirty dishes from breakfast tried to capture his attention. They could damn well wait. All night hadn’t happened in two years.

“Sue’s finally paying back all the babysitting favors?” He firmly shut the kitchen door on all the undone chores and the To Do list hanging from the cork board by the phone. Don’t fucking look back. Let. It. Go. Inhaling deeply, he headed in the direction of Kelly’s voice. “You cut the grass.”

“Yeah.”

“Change the oil in the car?”

“Yeah.”

Unbuttoning his shirt with shaking fingers, blood humming in his ears, Darrin entered their bedroom. What else damn it? What else is on the fucking to do list this weekend? “Gutters?”

“Fuck ‘em. Let the home owners association ticket us. I’ll start pulling them over as soon as they peel out of their driveways.”

His eyes sought Kelly on the bed, and found him, sprawled naked and body glistening with drops of water from his shower. Darrin shoved down his board shorts and briefs at once, stepping out of them. He left the red fabric in a puddle on the floor.

Naked, he launched himself at the bed. Kelly caught him and rolled him to the side.

“All afternoon...all night...twenty-four glorious hours of just us. What do you want to do first?”

“This.”

To his gratification, Kelly pulled him into his arms and leaned down to kiss him. Darrin eagerly accepted the kiss, sucking Kelly’s tongue and nipping at his lips. Finally he conceded control
